The Art & Design Program at Saint Michael’s College is a gem you don’t want to miss.
The Art & Design program at Saint Michael’s College hinges on the idea that art is truly EVERYWHERE and so artists can succeed ANYWHERE—as graphic designers, fine artists, photographers, or as scientists, economists, educators, and even CEOs! We nurture and guide our students to be people who can think, create, and communicate analytically and expressively.
We support each student in their individual journey to develop the skills and knowledge vital to their chosen form of expression and to careers in art- and design-related fields. And beyond.
Take just one class with us, or declare Art & Design as a major, we’re happy to create with you.
We give you space to create.
Sloane Art Center
Our program is housed in Sloane Art Center on North Campus, a unique space, used exclusively by Art & Design. Having our own building creates a sense of community and unique opportunities for creative freedom. Sloane gives students access to painting and sculpture studios, a darkroom, a printshop, a woodshop, and a computer lab. And, we have shared and private studios for students. (Don’t worry! We provide a van to get to and from Main Campus for classes.)
Sloane is funky; it is all ours and we love it.
A&D MacLabs
On main campus, we have two computer labs. Both are filled with Mac Studios loaded with the Adobe Creative Suite and other industry-standard software. In the labs, we provide professional equipment for students to use: photo-quality printers; a large-format, high-resolution scanner; DSLR cameras with tripods; camcorders; and Wacom drawing tablets. Additionally, Art & Design students can check out an iPad (and Apple Pencil) with illustration software from IT.
As an Art & Design major you’ll have your own exhibition in the McCarthy Art Gallery.
All our Senior Art & Design majors, create and exhibit a significant body of original work in the McCarthy Art Gallery as a capstone project to the major. This is a unique opportunity that gives students the real-life experience of creating professional level work.
Each student’s exhibit is truly unique and expresses the individual artist. There have been animated movies, fashion shows, series of paintings, site specific sculptures, illustration series, short films… Dream it and we will help make it.
Follow the Gallery’s Instagram to find out about upcoming shows and see what students create.

We support you —for just one class or across all your SMC years as a major.
Faculty
Our faculty supports and guides students to create in their passion and succeed in their endeavors. Our classes are open and approachable to first-time makers, while simultaneously challenging experienced artists. We meet students wherever they are on their art journey.
And, since all our faculty are active creative professionals, we impart the skills students need to succeed in visual art and design fields: creating art & design portfolios; writing resumes and cover letters; creating project pitches; and assembling a professional dossier.
Scholarships
Making art can get expensive! We have two unique opportunities to help financially support Art & Design majors. The Fairbanks-Paulin Scholarship is awarded to an incoming student. And McCarthy Scholarships are awarded to continuing Art & Design majors. These awards support student’s studies and creative experimentation while at SMC.
